Glufosinate – ammonium is a highly effective herbicide used for weed control in more than 100 crops grown in many countries around the world. Farmers often use this active ingredient because it ensures high crop safety, only parts of the plant that have been sprayed will be affected. Glufosinate-ammonium is effective on a wide range of weeds, limiting the use of a variety of herbicides to kill weeds. This unique herbicide makes it possible for them to rotate with other herbicides to reduce weed resistance.
1. Mechanism of action
Glufosinate – Ammonium is a plant protection active ingredient that works by inhibiting a central enzyme in plant metabolism. Plants absorb this substance mainly through its leaves and green parts, Glufosinate-ammonium is a contact herbicide and it is only effective in contact with grass. This allows it to control weeds without affecting the roots or requiring soil preparation before eradication, making it easier to cultivate in eroded areas such as steep slopes.
The main mode of action of Glufosinate-ammonium is inhibition of the enzyme glutamine synthetase. This enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of glutamine from glutamate, and ammonia plays a central role in plant nitrogen metabolism. This mode of action (unique among broad spectrum herbicides) is the key to minimizing resistance to other herbicides.
Therefore, Glufosinate-ammonium’s unique mechanism of action is an effective alternative to the herbicides Glyphosate and Paraquat, two product lines that have been banned in Vietnam.
